Château d’If

Today we went on our first boat ride. It was to an island called Island of If. (The castle on the island, Château d’If, is in many of the scenes of the book called The Count Monte Cristo, by Alexandre Dumas.) IMG_3111The castle was built in the 1500s and was used many times as a fortress, even during World War II. The building is not really a castle but more like a prison with stone walls and bars in the windows. We went into the stone room where Edouard Dantes was held prisoner in the book. The whole place freaked me out a little (the thought of people dying in those very dark and gloomy cells).
